Help me take on the World's Coolest Readathon!

Help me support the mental health of Australian Defence Force Personnel

Edit: thanks for the support so far! I have hit my $200 goal! I can't officially up my goal this late in the month, but let's see if we can hit $300 regardless!

I am participating in The World's Coolest Readathon between the 1st and 30th of September!

My reading has been a bit up and down this year, but the most books I've read in one month so far has been 6, so this month I'll be trying to push myself to 7 or 8!

All money raised goes toward the mental health charity 'Brothers and Books', whose programs support Australian Defence Force soldiers, Veterans and emergency services.

Please help me reach my fundraising goal! Sign up yourself to read some great books and support a brilliant cause!

Book 7 - A Far Wilder Magic

Wednesday 25th Sep
Finished 25/09 - 2.75 stars

I went into this believing it was another cosy fantasy, and it started out feeling that way. The writing was beautiful and the characters were really well drawn. However, between the open-door sex scene (surprisingly open door for a YA novel!) and some of the visceral descriptions of violence, it didn't feel very cosy by the end. I think if I'd gone in with different expectations I probably would have enjoyed it more. As it is, it was pretty okay.

Book 6 - The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley

Saturday 21st Sep
Finished 21/09

I absolutely adored the majority of this book, but the time travelly stuff at the end confused me a bit, and the love story suffered from the Moonlighting Curse (i.e. it got boring once they got together). I had been resisting getting it from the library for ages because of the 1 week loan period, but that ended up not being a problem because I devoured it over three days.

Book 5 - Only the Astronauts

Tuesday 17th Sep
No fun photo this time because this was an audio book. A collection of short stories each focusing on a man-made object that has been sent into space.

Starman, the mannequin sent into space on board a cherry red Tesla roadster, yearns to return to his creator.

The ISS takes on us a tour of itself just prior to being decommissioned, and the final astronauts on board write sonnets in its honour.

Neil Armstrong's spirit inhabits a small statue of an astronaut on the moon.

A team of intrepid tamponauts set out for Mars, inspired by those who came before .

And the Voyager 1 space probe considers its relationship to humanity, in particular, Carl Sagan, as it prepares to present its precious Golden Record to the Oortians near the edge of the solar system.

It was fun seeing the little interconnections, such as the Tamponauts story confirming that Ivan Ivanovich and Mr Smith made it to Mars, just like they had indicated they planned to in Starman, and V1 meets up with Starman on the Oortian planet much later.

These stories were full of hope and whimsy and presented a view of humanity from the outside. Sometimes it got a little weird, and they sometimes felt a little bit long-winded, but overall I enjoyed them a lot.

Books 3 and 4: Wires and Nerve Vols 1 and 2

Tuesday 17th Sep
Wires and Nerve and volume 2, Wires and Nerve: Gone Rogue, are graphic novel tie-ins to Marissa Meyer's Lunar Chronicles series. This was the series that really got me into fairy-tale retellings about ten years ago, and I was filled with nostalgia revisiting this world. I wasn't at all convinced by the romantic subplot, but that was okay. The conversations went around in circles a bit, too, but I enjoyed the way everything resolved. Maybe even got a bit teary at the end.

Finished: 16/09/2024

Book 2 - A Letter to the Luminous Deep

Saturday 14th Sep
Finished 11/09/2024

I need to stop reading books that are being compared to the Emily Wilde series, because apparently in my estimation, NOTHING compares to Emily Wilde.

I had a very rocky relationship with this book. I didn't even give it a star rating because I have not figured out how I felt about it. It felt like a 350-page prologue and book two is where things are going to actually get interesting.

I wrote a, um, 1000-word review trying to sort out my feelings and why the book didn't really work for me, which you can read here:

Book 1 - A Captured Cauldron by R. K. Ashwick

Saturday 14th Sep
3.5⭐ - finished 04/09/2024

I didn't love this one quite as much as the first in the series, but it was still very enjoyable! Eli and Ambrose's relationship is still the best part, even if it's not so much their romantic story now they've been together for a year. Dawn has the romantic subplot in this instalment and it just didn't hit the mark for me as much.

Here's the full review on my blog if you would like to hear more of my thoughts:
