Book 5: Herc COMPLETE 🥳

Monday 30th Sep
This was an exceptional take on the myth of Hercules and was told from everyone’s point of view - except the hero himself. It was emotive and raw and did not shy away from the brutal parts of his story.

Book 4: Empire of the Damned

Thursday 26th Sep
I was a little disappointed in this sequel. Let me explain why. The characters? Just as well-written and interesting as the first book ✅ The world-building? We got to see more of it so that’s a plus for me ✅ The plot/storyline? This is where it fell down a bit. It was an incredibly long novel yet throughout it lingered the simple question: what have we actually learned to move the plot forward? The answer is, unfortunately, not much until the last quarter or so and that created a sense of stagnation and disinterest. There were some minor pieces of acceleration but nothing anyone who had read the first couldn’t see coming or reliably guess. The balance between character and plot was skewed and it led to some extended wording that could have been cut. Overall? An okay book. I can see why people have it 4 or 5 stars but equally I understand why people were disappointed. I’ll admit I’m a little wary of reading book 3 since it’s longer but will still eventually give it a shot because, if nothing else, Jay Kristoff is a master at choosing the perfect words to craft a sentence.

Book 3: Long Live Evil!

Thursday 26th Sep
I wasn’t sure whether this one was for me once I started because the first bit was quite choppy and the paragraphs jumped from one thing to another without much connection. It interrupted my reading flow quite a bit as I had to reread in order to figure out what was going on. Maybe this was just me? I’m glad I stuck with it though because what an absolute trainwreck! I don’t think they could have created more chaos and mess if they’d actually be trying 🤣 What’s that saying? The road to Hell is paved with good intentions? The ending was sufficiently ambiguous I’m not actually sure what will happen in the sequel but you can bet your butt I’ll be reading it! Favourite part: anything with Marius and the Cobra. I am so invested in these two dorks right now.

Book 2: Dreadful complete!

Tuesday 10th Sep
This was an entertaining, short novel that had some interesting characters, good insights into how and why people do what they do, and some excellently stereotypical heroes being poked fun at that my villainish side appreciated. Decent book to pass a few hours.

First book complete!

Wednesday 4th Sep
A great sequel that kept up the laughs, the villainy and the found family vibes. 4/5 stabbies! 🗡️

Book 1: Apprentice to the Villain

Sunday 1st Sep
In my villain era! The first book was a delightful surprise of wit, villainy and loyalty so hopes are high for this sequel!
